LayerX develops Blockchain dialling system with digital identity verification in Japan

The Japanese city of Kaga has been supporting Blockchain since 2018 to counteract population decline in rural areas.

The Japanese company Layer X wants to join forces with the digital identity application xID to develop a block-chain-based voting system in the Japanese city of Kaga.

In a Thursday announcement by LayerX, the Tokyo-based company said it wanted to develop an electronic voting system to Bitcoin Up ensure secure voting for the city’s 68,000 residents. The company said that the cost and stability of current electronic voting systems in the region was a problem that needed to be addressed.

„Voting over the Internet brings more challenges. For example, it is necessary to prevent double voting and to solve the difficulties with the technical hurdles of ballot secrecy and the cost of voting machines,“ the company said in its announcement. „LayerX researched and developed an electronic voting protocol that strikes a balance between the transparency of the voting process and the confidentiality of the vote“.

It will also ensure that only one ballot is issued per person

According to the company, the xID application will strengthen the company’s existing voting system and help verify the identity of the voter. The LayerX system allows voters to verify their own election results. A cryptographic function will also be built into the system, allowing independent verification that the recording and aggregation processes have been carried out correctly for a given election on the block chain network.

Kaga was the first city in Japan to declare itself a „block chain city“. The initiative was designed to counteract the population decline in the rural areas of the country. Companies in the public and private sectors are to be encouraged to use innovative technologies. LayerX made a similar announcement in November. The company stated at the time that it wanted to join the „Smart City“ initiative of Tsukuba City.
